Application security for your industry

Ecommerce mobile app security

Otukan protects retail and ecommerce apps from login automation, loyalty theft and promotion abuse, with responses tuned so genuine checkout keeps flowing.

  • Android
  • iOS
  • Flutter
  • React Native
  • Shopper accounts stay theirs

Otukan makes stolen password lists and automated logins stand out, so saved cards, addresses and points stay with the shopper.

  • Three controls, one answer

Runtime checks keep the app honest, attestation proves it to your servers and API protection enforces the result at the edge.

  • Checkout keeps converting

Responses are tuned against successful checkouts, so security friction lands on abusers and stays out of the way of paying shoppers.

How Otukan handles commerce abuse

Choose an abuse path to see what Otukan detects, how the app reacts and what your commerce backend receives.

Automated logins

  1. Detect

Sign-in calls from scripts, emulators and modified clients lack the attestation your backend expects.

  2. Respond

Your backend slows, challenges or refuses unattested sign-in attempts.

  3. Report

Attestation and automation results reach your identity service per attempt.

Points drained after takeover

  1. Detect

Otukan flags a new app instance, an unbound device or remote access at the moment points or gift card balance are redeemed.

  2. Respond

Redemption pauses for step-up while browsing and basket use carry on.

  3. Report

Binding and session context accompany the redemption request.

Coupon account farms

  1. Detect

Emulator, automation and multi-instance signals link sign-ups that come from farms rather than individual shoppers.

  2. Respond

New-customer offers are withheld or sent for review, per your promotion rules.

  3. Report

Farm indicators feed your promotions and fraud tooling.

Checkout bots on drops

  1. Detect

Protected basket and checkout calls carry fresh attestation, which scripted clients fail to present.

  2. Respond

Unattested calls fall to the back of the queue or are refused.

  3. Report

Attestation outcome arrives at your API gateway with each call.

Modified shopping app

  1. Detect

Runtime and integrity checks catch hooking, debugging and rebuilt apps used to alter prices in requests or skip checks.

  2. Respond

Observe, warn, restrict or terminate, chosen per journey.

  3. Report

Integrity status travels with every protected request.

Commerce abuse and the Otukan controls that meet it

Each card links a retail abuse pattern to the Otukan control that addresses it.

  • Credential stuffing at login

Attestation and automation signals expose scripted login attempts that replay leaked passwords against your app's sign-in API.

  • Loyalty and stored value theft

Takeover signals at login, password reset and redemption protect points balances, gift cards and saved payment methods.

  • Promotion and coupon farming

Emulator, automation and multi-instance signals reveal account farms created to claim new-customer offers again and again.

  • Checkout and inventory bots

API protection lets your backend refuse scripted add-to-basket and checkout calls on limited stock and flash sales.

How Otukan works with a retailer

  1. List the abuse

We rank login, loyalty, promotion and checkout abuse by what each costs your business.

  2. Wire the layers

Runtime checks, attestation and API enforcement are connected for each protected journey.

  3. Ship as usual

Otukan joins your present build and release pipeline, with signing keys kept by your team.

  4. Measure checkout

Security responses are compared with checkout success and basket completion before rollout.

Check your app's exposure

You finish the request on the next page.

Retailers protect accounts, checkout and loyalty programmes by proving that each sensitive request comes from their genuine app used by a real shopper, then applying friction only where abuse shows up. Otukan detects automated logins, account farms, modified shopping apps and takeover conditions at redemption. It gives your API gateway attestation to enforce, and lets you tune every response against checkout success so paying customers are not caught in the net. Price rules, stock allocation and promotion policy stay with your commerce platform. Each control has its own Android and iOS scope.

Abuse paths in a shopping app

Commerce abuse is a business, and it follows the money. Four paths account for most of it.

Login automation

Leaked passwords from other sites are replayed against your sign-in API at scale. A small hit rate still means many compromised accounts, each with saved cards, addresses and loyalty balances. The attack rarely touches your app’s screens; it calls your API directly. For defences against password replay, see credential stuffing protection.

Loyalty and stored value theft

Points, gift cards and store credit are easy to spend and hard to trace. Once inside an account, an attacker redeems or transfers them quickly, often from a new device. Loyalty fraud is frequently found only when a genuine shopper complains.

Promotion abuse

New-customer discounts, referral bonuses and free-delivery codes invite account farming. One operator running emulators and cloned app instances can register a crowd of “new” shoppers, each claiming the offer. The discount is the loss.

Checkout and inventory bots

On limited releases and flash sales, scripts fill baskets and complete checkout before people can. Stock is resold elsewhere, genuine shoppers leave disappointed, and your launch becomes a reputational problem.

How the paths connect

These paths feed each other. Stuffed accounts supply the loyalty balances that are later drained. Farmed accounts supply the identities that checkout bots use on launch day. Modified apps help all of them, by skipping client-side checks or replaying requests with altered values. Treating each path as a separate problem leaves the shared tooling untouched. Otukan looks at the environment behind every sensitive request, whether it is a login, a sign-up, a redemption or a checkout. The same emulator or rebuilt client is then recognised wherever it appears in your app.

Connecting attestation, runtime and API protection

No single control stops these paths. Otukan connects three layers, each with a distinct job.

LayerJobWhat it catches aloneWhat it misses alone
Runtime protectionKeeps the running app honestHooking, debugging, modified builds, emulatorsScripts that never run your app at all
AttestationProves the genuine app to your serversScripts and cloned clients calling your APIGenuine app driven by a hooked process
API protectionEnforces the verdict at the edgeUnattested and replayed requestsAnything it is not told about

The table shows why buying one layer on its own disappoints. Together they close each other’s gaps. Runtime checks make sure the app producing attestation has not been hijacked. Attestation, through Play Integrity on Android and App Attest on iOS, tells your servers the request came from that app. API protection turns the evidence into a decision at your gateway before a login, redemption or checkout is processed. For the enforcement layer, see mobile API protection.

Weighing security responses against checkout

In retail, a blocked genuine shopper is lost revenue, often permanently. Otukan treats conversion as a security requirement.

  • Step-level responses. Friction applies to the step under attack, such as redemption or limited-stock checkout. Browsing, search and ordinary baskets carry on untouched.
  • Observe first. Every new signal runs silently while your team compares flagged sessions with completed orders, returns and complaints.
  • Graduated friction. A soft check, a queue or a step-up comes before a refusal, and policy changes without waiting for an app store release.
  • Shared scorecard. Otukan’s findings are reported so security, product and ecommerce teams can read abuse stopped next to checkout success.

Loyalty and booking flows in travel apps are covered on travel and mobility application security. The broader Otukan protection model is set out on mobile app security. If your shopping app is already published, a free App Exposure Check reviews the public store release.

Common questions

  • We already have bot protection on the web. Why add it in the app?

Web bot defences read browser behaviour, and a mobile API has no browser to read. Scripts that call your app's endpoints directly look like any other client unless the app itself can prove it is genuine. Otukan supplies that proof through attestation and integrity evidence, so your API gateway can apply the same firm stance to mobile traffic that it already applies on the web.

  • Will shoppers notice Otukan?

Genuine shoppers on unmodified phones should not. Otukan's checks run in the background, and responses apply to specific steps such as redemption or high-demand checkout rather than the whole app. Shoppers on rooted phones or older devices can still browse and buy; you decide which journeys ask them for extra verification, based on what observe mode shows.

  • Can Otukan tell a genuine deal-hunter from a coupon farm?

A single shopper claiming an offer is expected behaviour. A farm is many accounts sharing emulators, automation tools and cloned app instances. Otukan's signals describe the environment each sign-up comes from, and your promotion rules decide what counts as abuse. That keeps the judgement with your marketing and fraud teams, who know which offers can tolerate some leakage.
