  • Mapped to the journey

Otukan places controls at onboarding, login, recovery and payment steps, exactly where a fraudster has to act inside your app.

  • Signals your engine trusts

The protected app reports its own integrity, the device and how the session is driven, so your fraud engine decides with better evidence.

  • Measured against real cases

Every signal is recorded with the request, so you can line it up with confirmed fraud and keep genuine customers moving.

Fraud paths Otukan interrupts

Select a fraud path to see how Otukan detects it, how the app responds and what your fraud team receives.

Account takeover

  1. Detect

Attestation, device binding and runtime integrity show when a login comes from an unfamiliar device, a cloned app or automation.

  2. Respond

The app and backend step up authentication or hold the session, per your policy.

  3. Report

Your fraud engine receives the device and integrity signals with the login request.

Overlay attacks (Android)

  1. Detect

Otukan detects another app drawing over sensitive screens such as login and payee entry.

  2. Respond

The app warns the user, hides sensitive input or pauses the step.

  3. Report

The signal travels with the transaction so the backend can hold or decline it.

Accessibility abuse (Android)

  1. Detect

Otukan detects accessibility services reading the screen or performing taps during a session.

  2. Respond

Sensitive actions are restricted, while trusted assistive tools keep working under your policy.

  3. Report

Your fraud team sees which flows were driven by an accessibility service.

Remote-controlled sessions

  1. Detect

Platform-specific signals show screen sharing or remote control during sensitive steps on Android and iOS.

  2. Respond

The app pauses the transfer and shows a clear warning, per your policy.

  3. Report

The remote-access signal is attached to the payment request for review.

Camera injection in onboarding

  1. Detect

Otukan flags selfie or document media that did not come from the device's own camera.

  2. Respond

The onboarding step is stopped or routed to additional review.

  3. Report

Your identity verification service receives the signal with the session.

Modified or hooked app

  1. Detect

Runtime integrity checks detect repackaging, hooking and debugging that would let an attacker forge other signals.

  2. Respond

The app restricts or ends high-risk flows, per your policy.

  3. Report

Integrity results accompany every sensitive request.

Otukan fraud controls

Each control closes a different route fraud takes into a mobile session, scoped per platform.

  • Account takeover prevention

Separates the real account holder from stolen credentials, lifted sessions and remote-controlled devices.

  • Malware detection

Recognises what malicious apps do to your screens and session, without locking out legitimate assistive tools.

  • Overlay attack detection

On Android, detects another app drawing over sensitive screens to capture input or trick the user into tapping.

  • Accessibility abuse detection

On Android, detects accessibility services reading the screen or performing taps on the user's behalf.

  • Remote access fraud

Flags screen sharing and remote control during sensitive actions, with signals specific to Android and to iOS.

  • Social engineering protection

Adds friction and context at the moments a scammer on the phone is most likely to be directing the user.

  • Camera injection detection

Detects signs that selfie or document images did not come from the device's own camera.

  • KYC fraud prevention

Strengthens remote onboarding with app-side evidence, so identity checks resist scripted and synthetic sessions.

How it works

  1. Map the journey

Pick the onboarding, login, recovery and payment steps you want to protect.

  2. Protect the build

Otukan fits your existing build and release pipeline. Your signing keys stay with you.

  3. Collect signals

The app records integrity, device and session signals at each protected step.

  4. Decide on the server

Signals travel with the request, so your fraud engine allows, steps up, holds or declines.

  5. Measure and tune

Join signals to confirmed cases, then tighten policy step by step.

Otukan interrupts fraud at the points where an attacker has to act inside your app: signing in with stolen credentials, driving a session through malware or remote control, feeding fake media into onboarding, or steering a payment. The protected app reports what it can observe about itself, the device and how it is being used, and those signals travel with each sensitive request, so your fraud engine and identity service decide with better evidence. Otukan covers Android, iOS, Flutter and React Native apps, and scopes every signal per platform, because Android and iOS expose different behaviour.

Fraud journey

Fraud on mobile rarely happens in one step. It follows the customer journey, and each step offers a different route in. Otukan maps a control to each one.

Journey stepCommon fraud pathWhat Otukan detects in the appWho decides
OnboardingSynthetic identities, injected camera feeds, scripted sign-upsCamera source integrity, emulators and automation, app integrityIdentity verification service
LoginCredential stuffing, stolen sessions, logins from a cloned appApp and device attestation, runtime integrity, device bindingAuthentication service
Account recoveryNew device enrolment, social engineering, SIM swap follow-upNew or unbound device, remote access, overlays on recovery screensIdentity and fraud teams

Recovery deserves special attention. It is designed to let a customer in without their usual factors, which makes it attractive to attackers, and Otukan treats it as a high-risk flow. Overlays and accessibility abuse are Android signals; screen capture and device integrity signals exist on both platforms in different forms. For a step-by-step view of the takeover path, see the account takeover prevention guide.

Control boundaries

App signals

Otukan reports on the app’s own integrity, the environment it runs in and how the session is driven: a hooked or repackaged build, a rooted or jailbroken device, another app drawing over the screen on Android, an accessibility service performing taps, or a screen being shared. Runtime integrity underpins all of these, because a modified app could forge its other signals. Otukan checks integrity first, so your fraud engine knows whether the other signals come from an intact app. Mobile RASP covers those runtime checks, and malware detection covers malicious apps in detail.

Backend fraud decisions

Your fraud engine sees what the app cannot: account age, payee history, amounts, velocity across accounts and signals from other channels. Otukan’s app signals arrive as one more strong input. The engine weighs them, and your policy decides whether to allow, step up, hold or decline. The decision stays on the server, where it holds even when the attacker controls the device.

Identity services

Authentication and identity verification confirm who the person is. Otukan strengthens them by making sessions harder to replay, tokens harder to move to another device, and selfie checks harder to feed with fake media. For request-level evidence, see mobile API protection.

Clear ownership makes the whole chain work. When an overlay fires during a payee change, the app pauses the step, the backend holds the transfer, and your fraud team contacts the customer and closes the case.

Measurement

Connect signals to confirmed cases

Otukan records each signal with the sensitive request it accompanied, so you can join it to case outcomes confirmed by investigation or chargeback. For each signal, look at two numbers: how often it was present on confirmed fraud, and how often it fired on customers who turned out to be genuine. Signals that line up with real cases earn stronger responses.

Start by observing

Deploy new signals in observe mode first. Measure the legitimate-customer rate per platform, OS version and app version before any signal blocks or delays a customer. Some genuine users run screen readers, remote support tools or unusual devices, and a policy tuned on real traffic keeps them moving.

Report what you can defend

Otukan reports which signals were active, on which platforms and app versions, over which dates, and how they compared with confirmed cases. That gives your risk committee evidence it can check. Loss reduction is measured in your environment, against your own fraud mix, which makes the result yours to stand behind.

Common questions

  • Can an app detect fraud on its own?

An app sees things no server can: its own integrity, the device and how the session is being driven, such as overlays or remote control. The server sees account history, transaction patterns and identity data. Otukan joins the two by sending app signals with each sensitive request, so your fraud engine decides with a much fuller picture.

  • Are Android and iOS fraud signals the same?

No, and Otukan treats them separately. Android lets apps the user has permitted draw over other apps and run accessibility services, and some malware abuses both, so those signals are Android-specific. iOS gives third-party apps neither capability; its concerns include screen capture and jailbroken devices. Each signal has its own platform scope.

  • What about customers who are talked into paying a scammer?

When a customer acts willingly, no app check can see the intent. Otukan adds what the app can see: remote access and screen sharing at the moment of payment. Your policy can pause the transfer, show a clear warning and hand the case to your fraud team before money moves.

  • Where should the response happen: in the app or on the server?

Both, with the final decision on the server. The app can warn the user or pause a sensitive screen immediately. The signal then travels with the login or payment request, so your backend can step up, hold or decline. A decision kept on the server stays in force even on a device the attacker controls.
