Insurance application security comes down to one test: can the insurer trust what arrives from the app when money is at stake? Otukan gives your claims and payments systems the evidence to pass that test at the points that matter most. It proves claim photos came from a real camera, shows whether an incident location was spoofed, ties payout changes to the policyholder’s own device and exposes scripted access to your quote engine. Your claims, payments and fraud systems still make every decision, with better evidence in hand. Each control has its own Android and iOS scope, stated per control.
Where insurance apps are exposed
Insurance fraud through an app rarely looks like a classic intrusion. It looks like a normal customer doing a normal task with evidence that has been prepared in advance. Each journey has a trust boundary: the moment data created on the phone is accepted by a backend that acts on it.
| Journey | What an attacker wants | Trust boundary | Otukan evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Digital onboarding | A policy under a false or synthetic identity | Identity verification service | Onboarding automation signals, camera injection signals |
| Quote and purchase | Your underwriting logic, harvested at scale | Quote engine API | Attestation on protected quote requests |
| Claim submission | A paid claim for staged or recycled damage | Claims platform | Capture integrity for photos and video, location trust |
| Payout detail change | Claim money sent to an account they control | Payments service | Device binding, takeover signals, attestation |
| Telematics and activity | Better premiums from altered data | Telematics ingestion | Runtime integrity for every recorded session |
Claims and payouts deserve the strongest controls. A staged claim and a hijacked payout both convert straight into loss, and both are hard to unwind after payment. For how takeover chains unfold, see mobile account takeover prevention.
Who does what: app, operating system and backend
Good insurance application security is a division of labour. Otukan is explicit about which layer owns which job.
The app, protected by Otukan
Otukan runs inside your app. It checks for hooking, debugging, root, jailbreak and rebuilt copies, and its status travels with every other signal so the rest can be trusted. At claim capture it confirms that images come from the device camera. At a payout change it confirms the request comes from the policyholder’s bound app instance. It then applies the on-device response you chose for that journey.
The operating system
Android and iOS each provide primitives Otukan builds on, and they differ. Play Integrity returns verdicts about the app, the device and the installing account. App Attest proves a key belongs to a genuine instance of your app on an Apple device. Key storage sits in the Android Keystore and the iOS Keychain. Location sources are reported differently on each platform, and Otukan reads each on its own terms. For attestation in depth, see app attestation.
Your backend
Your servers verify attestation, weigh Otukan’s evidence against policy history and claim patterns, and decide whether to pay, query or refer. That decision stays out of reach of a compromised device. For identity checks at sign-up, see KYC fraud prevention.
Evaluating insurance application security
Three checks tell you whether a protection approach will hold up in an insurer’s real conditions.
Supported platforms
Ask for scope per control, per platform. Camera injection, location integrity and attestation behave differently on Android and iOS, and a shared label hides that. Otukan documents Android and iOS scope separately, plus the frameworks your app is built with, including Flutter and React Native.
Evidence your teams can use
A signal only helps if an adjuster or fraud analyst can read it. Otukan attaches results to the claim record in a form your teams agree in advance: what passed, what failed, and what the app did about it. Your internal audit function receives the same scope and test records.
Policyholder impact
People file claims under stress, often with older phones, poor connections or help from family. Otukan starts every signal in observe mode, measures how often it fires on genuine policyholders, and routes doubtful cases to review rather than refusal. Response policy changes without a new store release, so tuning follows what your claims team learns.
Otukan’s wider application protection is described on mobile app security. Insurers with an app already in the stores can request a free App Exposure Check of the public release.
