Application security for your industry

Streaming and media application security

Otukan protects streaming and media apps against modded clients, account abuse and content capture, alongside your DRM and entitlement services.

  • Android
  • iOS
  • Flutter
  • React Native
  • Paywalls stay closed

Otukan detects modded clients that unlock premium tiers or strip ads, and lets your entitlement service refuse them.

  • Protection around DRM

Your DRM protects the video stream. Otukan protects the app around it: sessions, downloads, artwork, text and the requests that fetch licences.

  • Subscribers, not scripts

Attestation and automation signals separate paying subscribers from credential stuffers and scripted access to your catalogue APIs.

How Otukan handles media threats

Select a threat to see what Otukan detects, how the app reacts and what your platform receives.

Modded premium client

  1. Detect

Integrity checks spot rebuilt apps, patched entitlement logic and foreign signing certificates.

  2. Respond

Premium playback and downloads are withheld from the modified build, per your policy.

  3. Report

Integrity status accompanies every licence and entitlement request.

Credential stuffing

  1. Detect

Sign-in calls from scripts and emulators arrive without the attestation your backend expects.

  2. Respond

Your identity service throttles or challenges unattested attempts.

  3. Report

Attestation results reach sign-in and account security services.

Licence request abuse

  1. Detect

Protected licence and manifest requests carry fresh attestation, which tools outside your app fail to present.

  2. Respond

Your licence service refuses requests from unattested clients.

  3. Report

Attestation outcome is logged with each licence decision.

Extracted downloads

  1. Detect

Runtime checks flag root, jailbreak, debugging and hooking around offline content.

  2. Respond

Offline playback pauses in an untrusted environment, per your policy.

  3. Report

Environment status is recorded against the download entitlement.

Capture of non-DRM screens

  1. Detect

On Android, protected screens are marked secure; on iOS, Otukan detects recording and mirroring.

  2. Respond

Previews and exclusive text are hidden while capture is active.

  3. Report

Capture events on protected screens are logged for your content security team.

Media threats and the Otukan controls that meet them

Each card pairs a threat to streaming and media apps with the Otukan control built for it.

  • Ad-free and unlocked mods

App shielding combines obfuscation, anti-tampering and runtime checks so rebuilt apps with removed ads or unlocked tiers are detected.

  • Downloaded content leakage

Data loss prevention protects offline downloads, cached artwork and exclusive text stored by the app on the device.

  • Scripted catalogue access

Bot detection exposes emulators and scripts that scrape catalogues, farm introductory offers or test stolen logins.

  • Screen capture of premium content

Screen capture protection covers app screens the DRM path does not, such as previews, articles and live chat.

How Otukan works with a media team

  1. Chart the flows

We map sign-in, entitlements, licence requests, downloads and ads to the services that trust them.

  2. Shield the client

Obfuscation, integrity and runtime checks are added within your usual build and release process.

  3. Feed your services

Attestation and integrity status reach entitlement, licence and sign-in services with each call.

  4. Check the viewing

Start-up, playback start and download behaviour are tested on your target phones and tablets.

Streaming and media application security is judged by what sits outside the DRM. Your DRM system protects the encrypted video path. Otukan protects everything around it: the code that decides who may watch, the requests that fetch licences, offline downloads and cached assets, ad logic and the screens DRM does not reach. It detects modded clients that unlock paid tiers or remove ads, exposes scripted access to sign-in and catalogue APIs, and sends evidence to your entitlement and licence services. Every control carries a separate scope for Android and for iOS.

Media flows and their trust boundaries

A streaming app makes many small trust decisions every session. Each one is a boundary where something on the phone asks a service to hand over value.

Ad-supported tiers deserve particular attention. A mod that removes ads costs you the impression and the advertiser’s confidence in your audience figures, and it spreads quickly through unofficial download sites. The most expensive failures happen at entitlement and licence requests, because a modded client that passes them unlocks the whole catalogue for everyone who installs it. For shielding in depth, see mobile app shielding.

App, operating system and backend responsibilities

The app, with Otukan

Otukan hardens your app’s code with obfuscation, checks its integrity while it runs, and detects hooking, debugging, root and jailbreak. It protects content the app stores on the device and shields screens that DRM does not reach. It then attaches its findings to the requests your services care about.

The operating system and your DRM

Android and iOS provide the secure video path, hardware-backed keys where available, and attestation through Play Integrity and App Attest. On Android, an app can mark a screen secure so screenshots and recordings of it are blocked. On iOS, apps cannot block screenshots but can detect recording and mirroring. Your DRM system uses the platform’s protected playback path. Otukan works beside it, not inside it. The division is deliberate: your DRM keeps doing what it was chosen for, and Otukan adds a trustworthy client in front of it.

Your backend

Your entitlement, licence and sign-in services verify Otukan’s evidence and make the call: stream, download, challenge or refuse. Concurrency limits and household rules stay there too. For how downloaded and cached content is protected, see data loss prevention.

Evaluating protection for a media app

Supported platforms

Ask for scope per control and per platform. Screen capture works differently on Android and iOS, and download protection depends on each platform’s storage model. Otukan states Android and iOS scope separately and covers apps built with Flutter and React Native. Television and set-top apps are scoped per enquiry.

Evidence your platform can act on

Signals only matter if a service reads them. Otukan agrees with your team which field each service checks, what a failed check means, and how results are logged for anti-piracy and account security teams.

Viewer impact

Viewers judge an app by how fast playback starts. Otukan tests protected builds for start-up time, playback start and download behaviour on the phones and tablets your audience uses. New signals start in observe mode, and responses target premium playback and downloads rather than browsing or free content. Policy changes reach viewers without waiting for a store release, so tuning can follow a major live event or a new season.

Scripted catalogue scraping and login testing are covered on mobile bot detection. The complete Otukan application product is presented on mobile app security. Media apps already in the stores qualify for a free App Exposure Check of the public version.

Common questions

  • We already use DRM. What does Otukan add?

DRM protects the encrypted video path and the keys that unlock it, and it does that job well. It does not protect the rest of the app: the code that decides entitlements, the requests that fetch licences, cached artwork, article text and ad logic. Otukan protects that surrounding layer and tells your licence and entitlement services whether the client asking for content is genuine.

  • Can Otukan stop account sharing?

Account sharing is a business policy question first. Otukan gives your platform reliable facts to apply that policy: whether a request comes from your genuine app, and which app instance and device it comes from. Your concurrency and household rules decide what is allowed. That split keeps the commercial decision with your team and makes the evidence behind it harder to fake.

  • Does Otukan cover TV and set-top apps?

This page describes protection for Android and iOS phone and tablet apps, including those built with Flutter and React Native. Television and set-top platforms have their own operating systems and constraints. If they are part of your estate, name them in your enquiry and we will set out the scope that applies to each.
